Banana Boat Natural Reflect Baby Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50 — $8.23 each

Amazon.com has a $2 off coupon for Banana Boat Natural Reflect Baby Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50. You’ll need to click on the coupon on the product page for the discount to be applied at checkout. With the Subscribe & Save program, that makes this sunscreen $8.23 for a 4-ounce tube — that’s 31% off the retail price. Remember, you can cancel a subscription at any time.

This sunscreen is not listed in the Environmental Working Group’s Cosmetics Database, but I created my own report for it based on the information on the Amazon website and the sunscreen rated a “1″ in terms of risk, making it among the safest sunscreens on the market. (The database’s scale runs from 0-10, with “10″ being the highest risk, but the lowest-scoring sunscreens with a SPF 30 or higher in the database score a “1″.) Please note that this report was based solely on the active ingredients listed on Amazon.com’s website and it has not been verified by EWG staff, so it is preliminary.

According to the product description, this sunscreen deflects UVA or UVB rays without harsh chemicals, is  made of 100% naturally-sourced minerals, tear-free and sting-free, dermatologist tested,  oxybenzone- and paraben-free, and very water resistant.

  1. I just found this at Target today & am excited to try it. I’m hoping it will get into the EWG database soon. It rubs in so much more easily than the Badger brand sunscreen!

Ahhh, the coupon is gone already! I don’t see it there anymore. If you snooze, you loose. Thanks for the recommendation. I’ll pick some up at target soon. What other brands of sunscreen do you like, Eryn? I’d especially love a spray, if there is an all-natural one available for little miss! I want the most safe ones only. Time to stock up for summer!

Oops, lose not loose. My bad!

    • I like the Badger baby sunscreen. I’m most comfortable with it safety-wise. The only downside is that it does leave a bit of white residue, but I’d rather deal with that than toxic chemicals.

  3. I’m sorry, where exactly does it say it is “chemical-free”? Maybe I’m missing something. true they word it well: “features naturally sourced mineral sunscreen actives and zinc oxide” and “without the use of harsh chemical sunscreens” but that’s speaking of what they are calling the “sunscreens”, i.e. the zinc, titanium… It’s not claiming to have no chemicals, and if they do they are lying. It’s not biodegradable. It’s not reef-safe. I am also not sure it’s nano particles or not because they don’t bother stating it (which leads me to believe it is – especially since they use alumina and silica which are oft used to coat nanoparticles). Alumina separated from its source, processed = aluminum oxide). Aluminum in excess (we are all getting too much aluminum as it is) is in NO way safe for kids to be smeared with. It’s also a skin irritant as many have experienced with deodorants (and yes, they enter the skin just as they do with deodorants). The marketing is REALLY well done though. I just wouldn’t use it on myself or anyone I loved. in Hawaii families and watermen and women prefer this: http://www.rawelementsusa.com/

    • Thanks for your response. I don’t think I or Banana Boat ever claimed that this sunscreen is “chemical-free.” I also never claimed that it was biodegradable or reef-safe. I stated in this post that the product description said it “deflects UVA or UVB rays without harsh chemicals,” and I stand by that because that’s exactly what it says. What constitutes “harsh chemicals” may differ from person to person. Obviously, you think it contains harsh chemicals that you wouldn’t want to use. That’s your choice, but other people may see it differently.

I was not aware when I wrote the post that it contained alumina, as there’s no information about the ingredients on the Amazon product page other than the active ingredients titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, so thanks also for pointing that out.

I haven’t used Raw Elements sunscreen, but it looks like a eco-friendly and healthy option. Thanks for the recommendation.

For the record, I haven’t used the Banana Boat Natural Reflect sunscreen either. I got burned recently using my old stand-by Badger sunscreen, so lately I’ve been using Tropical Sands. I’ve been happy with it’s sun protection level, but it is a lot more difficult to put on without looking like a ghost than some of the other natural sunscreens I’ve tried.
